E.coli - results broadly reflect the trends we have seen over the summer months, with high E.coli readings at and below the sewage treatments plants. These are raised further by lower flow in the August/ early September period. Of particular note are:-
E.coli levels on the Fynn and Lark are higher than for several months; however we have three new sample points at Tuddenham all of which are relatively clean.
After several months of relatively low readings at the Rendlesham outfall (less than 45 Colonies per 1ml), we have seen a big increase here, taking this sampling point up to similar levels seen at Martlesham Creek, Wickham Market and Easton
At Debenham, there are higher than expected readings around Aspall where the source waters emerge from ditches and small streams. These points will need further investigation and monitoring in the coming months. There appears to be an anomoly at the Debenham STW outfall with had a low readings compared to the adjacent sampling points - this needs checking in coming sampling runs.
The August result from Ramsholt Quay is being investigated by the Environment Agency as it was so close to Waldringfield; this month's figure is back to well within the safe bathing guidelines.
Phosphates - apart from two samples on the River Lark, all the phosphate readings were above the Natural England “healthy river” guideline of 0.1 mg/ litre maximum.
The sewage treatment works outfall at Martlesham Creek, Rendlesham and Easton readings were very high.
At Debenham, the new phosphate stripping technology does look to have made a big difference and is showing sample results within the new EA permit limits which kick in at the end of 2024.
At Wickham Market and Charsfield, we may be seeing the first signs of reduction in phosphate levels as both have come down significantly from July and August levels. These need careful monitoring in the coming months.
Ammonia - we have a limited set of results for ammonia (no map here) with only Easton STW showing any real concern. This STW is small and has a low flow outfall.
